Do you have blackheads? Want to learn how to get rid of blackheads?

Treating blackheads requires that you understand what a blackhead is. What causes a blackhead? How does it differ from a whitehead, pimple or zit? When you understand the causes of a break out, you can treat it.

When the reasons and origin are known, we can attack the source of problem and the blackheads will get eliminated. So, what is a blackhead, whitehead or pimple?

A breakout begins with a clogged pore. Each hair follicle is a combination of a follicle, a pore and a sebaceous gland. A pore can become clogged as dead skin cells block the pore. The oil from the sebaceous gland can't get out becomes trapped within the pore. The light colored oil creates a whitehead.

A pore that is only partially blocked allows some air inside the pore. The trapped oil reacts with the oxygen and darkens, becoming a blackhead.

This could become a pimple or zit in the future. This is because the bacteria which reside on the skin consumer the sebum oil. Since the blocked pore does not allow air to come in, it provides a perfect space for it to grow and multiply. White blood cells arrive at the pore in an attempt to eliminate these foreign bacteria. This causes inflammation and bumps on the skin. This reaction by the immune system forms a pimple.

The treatments of blackheads or pimples can be categorized in two ways. First type includes exfoliants and involves facilitating the removal of dead skin cells. Certain elements can pierce the clogged pore and remove the blockages. Hence, the sebum oil gets out of the pore.

The second type of treatments is substances designed to kill the bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide will increase the oxygen level on the skin, and kill the bacteria. This is effective at treating pimples.

Lemon juice is also an excellent skin exfoliant because lemon contains salicylic acid. The acid helps you to get rid of the dead skin cells. It too can pierce through the clogged pores and remove blockages and permit the sebum oil to escape. Again, this relieves the underlying cause and eliminates pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Lemon juice can be harsh on the skin. It may cause a rash. For this reason, it is recommended you try lemon juice on a small patch of skin as a test. It can also sting, especially on open sores or in the eyes.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. It is an exfoliant, similar to a brush. The gritty feel of the baking soda can scrub away the skin cells. You massage the baking soda on the skin. It unclogs pores and allows the sebum oil out.

The only thing to take care of is not to over scrub. This might damage the skin and cause inflammation, feelings of tenderness. This will cause more breakouts.

Toothpaste is another home remedy for acne. Toothpaste consists of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and alcohol. This hydrogen peroxide will raise the oxygen levels and kill bacteria. Alcohol is also deadly for bacteria. Alcohol is lethal since it causes dehydration. Alcohol is often used as a general disinfectant because of this action. And as said above, baking soda is an exfoliant. Toothpaste, hence, is a mixture of both the treatments.

Toothpaste can dry out the skin and a pimple. However it is likely to irritate the skin and cause redness and peeling. The skin can become burned by toothpaste.
